In and around Freetown
Freetown
Freetown was founded in 1787 by liberated slaves. Witnesses of this history can be found by visitors all over the city. For example, Freetown is divided into a number of districts that were established when each nationality of slaves founded its own district.
Interesting and worth visiting for travelers in this lively and buzzy city are also the markets.
Freetown is situated on many hills and from various places there are wonderful views over the town.
Lumley Beach
The main beach area of Freetown stretches is not too far from the city centre and can reached easily by public city transport. Many bars and restaurants are along the wide and sandy beach.
Lakka Beach
About 25 km west of Lumley is the quiter Lakka Beach. From a restaurant on a small island nearby the beach, you have nice views over the peninsular mountains.River No. 2
About 25 kms further more west is River No. 2, a white-sand beach that stretches some kilometeres, with a jungle like vegetation around. There is a small guest house at River No. 2. To get there from Freetown, the best option is to hire a taxi. The road on the west side of the Freetown Peninsular is bad and bumpy.
Mama Beach
Some 40 kms from Freetown is this quite, golden-sand beach that offers fascinating views to the wooded penisular mountains. A guest house with some roomy bungalows in a forest of palms invites the visitor to relax for a few more days. Boat trips to Banana Island can be made from here and the near fishing village gives a view of the everyday´s life.
To get from Freetown to Mama Beach by public transport on the new, tared road, the vehicle has to be changed at Waterloo.
Bureh Beach
A few kilometers further is Bureh Beach where a river cuts the beach in two. No accommodation can be found here, but locals arrange to prepare delicious meals on the beach next to a few bamboo huts. Like getting to Mama Beach from Freetown, public transport vehicle has to be changed at Waterloo.
Banana Island
It can be reached by boat from either Mama Beach or Bureh Beach. Locals offer boat trips to Banana Island. Snorkeling and fishing near these island are superb. In the near of Dublin Village, one of the two villages of Banana Island, some interesting ruins of a church and an old slave centre can be found.top >>>
